Keyword Research for Beginners: How to Find Searches That Bring Customers

By Lahore Digital Marketing Team | 6 min read

Every successful website starts with a quiet question: what words do my customers actually type into Google? Get that right and your content meets people where they already are. Get it wrong and you spend months writing about things nobody searches for.

Keyword research is the process of finding those words, judging which ones are worth chasing and matching them to pages on your site. This guide covers it in plain steps, using free tools, with examples from the Pakistani market.

What is keyword research?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase someone types into a search engine. Keyword research means collecting those phrases, understanding what each person really wants and picking the ones that fit your business and your chances of ranking.

It is not about finding the biggest number. A phrase with 50 monthly searches that brings buyers can be worth more than a phrase with 5,000 searches that brings curious readers.

Understand search intent first

Search intent is the reason behind the search. Google works hard to match intent, so your page must match it too.

Intent Example search Best page type
Informational what is seo Guide or blog post
Commercial investigation best seo company in lahore Comparison or service page
Transactional buy running shoes online Product or category page
Navigational lahore digital marketing contact Brand or contact page
Local dentist near me Local page and Business Profile

If someone searches “how to make a website” and you show them a sales page for web design, they leave. If someone searches “web design company in Lahore” and you show them a long essay, they also leave. Pair the page with the intent.

Step 1: Start with your business

List what you sell, who buys it and the problems you solve. Write these in the words a customer would use, not your industry jargon.

For a Lahore interior design studio, the list might include “office interior design”, “false ceiling design”, “kitchen renovation cost” and “interior designer in DHA”.

Step 2: Expand with free sources

You do not need expensive software to begin. These sources show what real people search.

  • Google autocomplete. Type your idea and note the suggestions that appear.
  • People Also Ask. The question boxes on results pages are a goldmine for blog topics.
  • Related searches. Found at the bottom of the results page.
  • Google Search Console. If your site already has traffic, the Performance report lists the queries people used to find you.
  • Google Keyword Planner. Free with a Google Ads account, it shows ideas and volume ranges.
  • Competitor pages. Look at the titles and headings of pages that already rank.
  • Customer language. Read emails, WhatsApp messages and reviews. Customers often phrase things in surprising ways.

Paid tools such as Semrush and Ahrefs add accurate volumes and difficulty scores, and many agencies use them. Treat any tool’s numbers as estimates.

Step 3: Check the data

For each promising phrase, look at three things.

Search volume. An estimate of monthly searches. Low volume is not bad, especially for local and specific phrases.

Keyword difficulty. How hard it is to rank, usually scored 0 to 100. New websites should start with lower difficulty phrases, then climb.

Search results. Google the phrase yourself. Who ranks? Are they big brands, directories or small businesses? If the first page is full of forums and thin pages, you have a good chance.

Key point

Do not trust a score blindly. A “difficult” keyword with weak, outdated results can still be winnable, and an “easy” one dominated by strong brands may not be.

Step 4: Group keywords by topic

Most pages can rank for dozens of related phrases. Group keywords that share intent, and assign each group to one page.

For example, “seo services in lahore”, “seo company lahore” and “seo agency in lahore” all describe the same need, so they belong together on one strong page. Creating a separate page for each tiny variation leads to near-duplicate content competing with itself, which is called keyword cannibalization.

Step 5: Prioritise

You cannot do everything at once. Rank your list by three questions.

  1. Does it match something we sell?
  2. Is the intent likely to bring customers, not just readers?
  3. Can we realistically rank for it in the next six months?

Start with a handful of phrases that score yes on all three. These are your quick wins. Then add bigger, harder terms as your site grows in authority.

Short-tail, long-tail and local keywords

  • Short-tail: broad terms like “seo”. High volume, high competition, vague intent.
  • Long-tail: specific phrases like “how much do seo services cost in pakistan”. Lower volume, clearer intent, easier to win.
  • Local: phrases with a place, such as “web design company in karachi” or “seo services in sialkot”. Very valuable for businesses serving specific areas.

For most small businesses, long-tail and local keywords are where growth begins. Read our guide to ranking on Google Maps for more on the local side.

Keyword research for Pakistani markets

A few things to keep in mind.

  • People search in English, Urdu and Roman Urdu. Check variations like “website banwana” or “seo kaise kare” and decide whether they match your audience.
  • City names matter. “Lahore”, “Karachi”, “Islamabad” and “Sialkot” change competition and intent.
  • Volumes for local phrases can look small in tools. Do not ignore them. They often convert well.
  • Exporters should research the language of overseas buyers, such as “football manufacturer” or “surgical instruments supplier”, not only Pakistani phrases.

Turn keywords into content

Once you have a list, map each group to a page.

  • Service pages for commercial phrases
  • Location pages for local phrases, each with unique content
  • Blog posts for informational questions
  • Comparison and cost pages for investigation phrases

Use the main keyword in the title, H1, opening paragraph and a few headings, then write naturally. Our on-page SEO checklist shows the setup, and how to write SEO blog posts shows the writing.

Revisit and refine

Keyword research is not one-and-done. Every few months, check Search Console for new queries, see which pages are close to page one and add content to match emerging questions. Trends change quickly, especially with AI search shifting how people ask. See our AI SEO guide.
