How to Write SEO Blog Posts That Actually Rank (And Read Like a Human Wrote Them)

By Lahore Digital Marketing Team | 7 min read

Plenty of blogs publish every week and never get a single visitor from Google. Others publish a few posts a month and quietly grow into the biggest source of leads for their business. The difference is not luck, and it is not word count. It is understanding what a searcher wants and writing the clearest, most useful answer.

This guide shows exactly how to write blog posts that rank, from choosing the topic to updating the post six months later. It is written for business owners and new writers, with no jargon beyond what you need.

What makes a blog post rank?

Search engines try to show the page that best satisfies the person searching. Ranking comes from a mix of relevance to the query, helpfulness and trustworthiness of the content, the authority of your site and how good the page experience is.

You control the first two almost entirely. That is why a small business with a thoughtful article can outrank a famous brand with a thin one.

Step 1: Choose topics people actually search for

Start with questions your customers ask: in calls, WhatsApp messages and reviews. Then check demand using Google autocomplete, People Also Ask and a keyword tool. Our keyword research guide shows how.

Good blog topics for businesses include:

  • How-to guides: “How to choose a wedding photographer in Lahore”
  • Cost explainers: “How much does AC installation cost in Pakistan”
  • Comparisons: “Shopify vs WooCommerce”
  • Checklists: “Pre-launch website checklist”
  • Mistakes and myths: “Common SEO myths businesses believe”
  • Local guides: “What to check before buying a plot in a new society”

Pick topics where you can add real experience, because that is where you beat generic content.

Step 2: Match search intent

Look at the first page of results for your target phrase. What kind of pages are ranking: guides, lists, product pages, videos? That tells you what Google believes people want. Your post should fit that pattern, then go further.

For example, if the top results for “how to start an online business in Pakistan” are step-by-step guides, writing a sales page will not work. Our own guide to starting an online business follows that pattern.

Step 3: Outline before you write

An outline keeps the post focused and complete. List the questions a reader will have, in a sensible order, and turn them into headings.

A reliable structure looks like this.

  1. A clear title that includes the main keyword
  2. A short introduction that names the problem and promises what the reader will learn
  3. Main sections, each answering one question
  4. Examples, steps, tables or checklists
  5. A brief conclusion with a next step
  6. A short FAQ section for related questions

Check what competing posts cover and note what they miss. That gap is your angle.

Step 4: Write a title and introduction that earn the click

Your title should be clear first and clever second. Include the keyword naturally, state the benefit and stay within about 60 characters for the search title.

The introduction has one job: convince the reader they are in the right place. Name their problem, show you understand it and say what they will get. Avoid long preambles, since people decide in seconds.

Step 5: Write like a person

Search engines reward helpful content written for people, and readers can feel the difference between a person and a template.

  • Write in the first and second person: “you” and “we”.
  • Use short sentences and everyday words.
  • Give examples and local details.
  • Show experience: what you tried, what failed, what you would do again.
  • Vary the rhythm. Mix short lines with longer explanations.
  • Cut filler such as “in today’s fast-paced world”.
Key point

A good test: would you say this sentence to a customer sitting across the table? If not, rewrite it.

If you use AI tools to help with drafting, treat the output as a rough start. Add facts you have verified, your own experience and your own voice, then edit carefully. Google’s guidance focuses on whether content is helpful, not on how it was produced.

Step 6: Structure the post for scanning

Most people skim before they read.

  • Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings
  • Keep paragraphs to two to four lines
  • Use bullets and numbered lists for steps
  • Add tables for comparisons
  • Bold key phrases sparingly
  • Add a table of contents on longer posts

Clear structure also helps search engines and AI tools extract answers. Our guide to AI SEO explains why.

Step 7: Optimise on the page

Once the draft is good, apply on-page basics. The on-page SEO checklist covers each item in detail. In short:

  • Main keyword in the title, the H1, the first paragraph and a couple of headings
  • A unique meta description
  • A short, readable URL
  • Compressed images with descriptive alt text
  • Internal links to related pages and external links to trustworthy sources
  • Schema markup where relevant, such as Article and FAQPage

Do not stuff keywords. If it reads awkwardly, rewrite it.

Step 8: Add images, examples and proof

Visuals break up text and explain ideas. Use original photos, screenshots, diagrams and simple charts instead of generic stock images. Describe each image in the alt text. Back claims with examples, data or links to reliable sources. If you cite statistics, link to the original.

Internal links help readers find related content and help search engines understand your site. Link to relevant service pages, older guides and new posts. Use descriptive anchor text, such as “local SEO services in Lahore”, instead of “click here”. Aim for a few natural links per post rather than dozens.

How long should a blog post be?

There is no magic length. A post should be as long as it needs to be to fully answer the question. Competitive, broad topics like “what is SEO” usually need thorough coverage, often well over a thousand words. A narrow question may be answered well in six hundred. Compare the posts that already rank and aim to be more complete, clearer and better organised.

Step 10: Publish, promote and improve

Publishing is the start. After the post goes live:

  1. Submit the URL in Google Search Console.
  2. Share it on social media and email, and tell people who might find it useful.
  3. Add links to it from your own related pages.
  4. Check Search Console after a few weeks to see which queries it appears for.
  5. Update it every few months with new information, better examples and fixed links.

Posts that sit between positions 8 and 20 are often the quickest wins, since a little improvement can move them onto page one.

Common blogging mistakes

  • Writing without checking search demand or intent
  • Copying or lightly rewriting competitor posts
  • Publishing thin content just to hit a schedule
  • Ignoring the introduction and structure
  • Forgetting a call to action
  • Never updating old posts
  • Writing for search engines instead of people

Make your blog support your business

A blog that ranks only helps if readers can take a next step. End posts with a relevant call to action, such as a free audit, a quote request or a related guide.
