On-Page SEO Checklist: 15 Fixes That Help Every Page Rank Better

By Lahore Digital Marketing Team | 6 min read

You can publish the best article in your industry and still get no traffic if the page is not set up properly. The reverse also happens: an average page with clear structure outranks a brilliant one that confuses search engines.

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself. Titles, headings, text, images, links and the code behind them. This checklist covers the 15 changes that make the biggest difference, in an order you can follow page by page.

Before you start: pick one main topic per page

Every page should answer one main search intent. If a page tries to rank for “web design in Lahore”, “SEO services in Karachi” and “how to bake a cake”, it will rank for none.

Write down the main keyword and two or three closely related phrases before you edit anything. If you have not researched them yet, start with our keyword research guide.

1. Write a clear title tag

The title tag is the blue headline people see in search results. It is one of the strongest on-page signals.

  • Put the main keyword near the beginning.
  • Keep it under about 60 characters so it is not cut off.
  • Make it promise something useful, not just list keywords.
  • Add your brand at the end if there is room.
  • Make each title unique across the site.

A weak title: “Services”. A better one: “SEO Services in Lahore | Local SEO Company”.

2. Write a meta description that earns the click

Meta descriptions do not directly raise rankings, but they influence whether people click. Aim for 120 to 155 characters, include the main keyword naturally, state the benefit and finish with a call to action.

3. Use one H1 and a logical heading structure

Each page needs one H1 that states the topic. Use H2s for main sections and H3s for sub-points. Headings should read like an outline of the page. Use keywords where they fit, but write for humans.

4. Put the keyword in the first 100 words

Say what the page is about quickly. This helps search engines and tells visitors they are in the right place. Do not force it. If it reads naturally, it counts.

5. Write genuinely helpful content

This is where most pages win or lose. Ask yourself what a person searching this phrase wants to know, then answer it more clearly and completely than the pages already ranking.

  • Cover the main question and the follow-up questions.
  • Use real examples, local details and specifics.
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentences plain.
  • Update the page when facts change.

Length is not the goal. Completeness is. Our guide on how to write SEO blog posts goes deeper.

6. Use keyword variations, not repetition

Search engines understand synonyms and related phrases. Instead of repeating “SEO services in Lahore” twenty times, also use “SEO company”, “local SEO”, “rank on Google” and the questions people ask. Stuffing the same phrase makes content awkward and can hurt rankings.

Key point

A quick test: read the page aloud. If a sentence sounds like it was written for a robot, rewrite it.

7. Create clean, readable URLs

Short URLs that describe the page are best.

  • Good: /seo-services/local-seo/
  • Poor: /page?id=482&cat=7

Use lowercase letters and hyphens, avoid dates and unnecessary words, and do not change URLs after publishing unless you set up redirects.

8. Optimise images

Images improve pages, but they are also the top cause of slow loading.

  • Compress images before uploading.
  • Use modern formats such as WebP where possible.
  • Give files descriptive names, like lahore-shop-front.webp.
  • Add alt text that describes the image for people who cannot see it.
  • Set width and height to prevent layout shifts.

Internal links connect your pages, help visitors move around and tell Google which pages matter.

  • Link from related pages using descriptive anchor text, such as “local SEO services”, not “click here”.
  • Link from strong pages to new ones so they are found quickly.
  • Make sure every important page is reachable within a few clicks from the homepage.

Linking to reliable sources, such as official documentation, shows you did your homework and helps users. Avoid linking to low-quality sites, and mark paid or sponsored links appropriately.

11. Make the page mobile friendly

Most Pakistani searches happen on phones. Check that text is readable, buttons are easy to tap, menus work and nothing overflows the screen. Test with Google’s mobile tools and on a real device.

12. Improve page speed

Slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Compress images, use caching, remove unused scripts and choose decent hosting. Read our Core Web Vitals guide for the targets.

13. Add structured data

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and can make you eligible for rich results. Common types are Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, FAQPage, Product and Service. Always match the markup to content that is visible on the page.

14. Add a clear call to action

A page that ranks but does not convert is wasted. Tell people what to do next: call, message on WhatsApp, request a quote, read a related guide. Place the call to action where people finish reading, and again near the top for those ready to act.

15. Check indexing and track results

After publishing, request indexing in Google Search Console and monitor impressions, clicks and positions. Revisit pages every few months. Pages that sit just off page one are often the quickest wins, because small improvements can lift them.
